About the Artist

My name is Natasha Ann Harris and I am an Illustration artist currently based in Aberystwyth, Wales.  I am a student studying a Master’s degree in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University.
Growing up I began to fall in love with characters made up purely from imagination or inspired by tales of fiction and the past. Being able to think of a character simply from your own mind and being able to bring them to life as a concept was magical for me. The idea of using a digital tablet came about when studying in secondary school. I enjoyed drawing characters of fantasy and because others in the class did the same, I wanted my work to stand out above theirs. Digital art programmes enabled me to use more contrasting colours that couldn’t be achieved easily with paint and different textured brushes to use. Ever since then, never have I strayed far from the digital pen.

Outside of my book illustrations, my time is dedicated towards commissions and character designing. This side of my work can be viewed on my art profiles and blogs. Nothing is better than having the freedom of being able to draw character after character any way that you want. My options are limitless, and because of this I have made many concepts that have been sold off to others.
My artwork focuses on using digital illustration techniques to create images that are bright and unique, highlighting my line working skills and characteristic concept designs. In my Fine Art degree, there are very few students who use digital medium in their illustrations, so my work stands out for being different in comparison. After completing my Bachelors in Fine Art, I finally came across a way of illustrating that I was happier with as a whole. Naturally being stronger in my outlining skills, I now draw scenes and characters with sharp, varied line works supported with simplistic colour palettes to make them appear graphic and not so busy.
The illustration style seen in my galleries was created to be appealing to the eyes of children by taking their minds into the world of fantasy and make-believe. I wanted them to be simplistic yet detailed where the drawings needed to be. By creating everything with a rounded line, the scenes look more calm and child friendly, in comparison to concepts drawn with harsh jagged lines.
Throughout my years of active drawing, inspiration was taken from a number of character design and stylised illustrators. Artists such as Sabrina Kutugno and Steve Dorado played a big part in finding an illustration style that could work well for my children’s books.  Their work consisted of round, soft characters, using both strong and pastel colour palettes to bring the illustrations to life finalising them with textured overlays. I applied these techniques to my work by using my own texture overlay to make my digital drawings resemble watercolour.
